ICE HOLDZ
_________________________

ICE HOLDZ - Is a newer product that allows indoor rock climbers to practice ice climbing indoors. ICE HOLDZ is not a mis-spelling, it's the name of this new product. Ice Holdz have been on the market for almost 2 years and is used by competitive ice climbers to train in the off season and is used by many guides to train clients new to ice climbing, in the nice climate controlled atmosphere of the indoor gym, for proper ice tool placement, body position, and efficient progression. Ice Holdz are very durable, but not indestructible, with some holds having over 3,000 strikes to a given hold and still going strong! We have seen many products come and go that try to replicate ice climbing indoors. After evaluation this seems like a good product and addition to the Stone Age Rock Gym.

Ice climbing is not like rock climbing. Ice climbing requires specific tools like ice axes and crampons (no crampons indoors). Ice climbing requires a very different body position than rock climbing. To climb ice, or ice holds (Ice Holdz), you need to swing the sharp ice axe to penetrate the ice, or you can make a more delicate hooking placement on the ice feature or "dry tooling" on the surrounding rock, or indoor climbing holds.

If you want to give this new feature a try here is what needs to happen:

  • There is a FREE mandatory 30 minute course. We don't care how much or how little ice climbing you have done. This course is MANDATORY! (This course will not remain free, take advantage now) You must be age 13 or older.

  • You may bring your own ice axes or rent a set at the gym. If you bring your own they must 1) only have hammers on the back (absolutely no adze, or remove the adze) 2) we have tennis balls that will be taped on the hammers (easily removable) 3) your axes must be leashed or tethered (falling axes could hurt bystanders or damage the flooring, you must have a wrist leash or tether for leashless axes), the Stone Age Rock Gym has a specially designed tether you can rent for leashless axes.

  • You must wear a helmet (both climber and belayer). The climber is STRONGLY encouraged to use a face shield. You may bring your own rock climbing helmet (no non-climbing helmets!) The Stone Age Rock Gym has helmets with face shields to rent.

  • You will be climbing in rock climbing shoes. Sorry folks no plastics, no crampon compatible leather boots, absolutely no crampons in the gym!

You are responsible for your own safety and good judgment while climbing. Climb safely and at your own risk -OR- don't climb. We will help teach you to engage this sport safely but your good judgment is the determining factor.
