Regional ClimbingThere are a wide variety of climbing areas in Connecticut, most offering cliffs of the volcanic basalt variant called "traprock". Some refferences to climbing in Connecticut include Rock Climbing Connecticut by David Fasulo, also Traprock and Hooked On Traprock by Ken Nichols. Some areas are also documented in East Coast Rock Climbs and Rock 'N' Road. Books are available at Stone Age or mountaineering / camping retailers. Best is to hire a guide service or find a local climber who knows the area. Please note that all climbing areas in Connecticut are under significant pressure, and they are all on state, town, or private land. Enter and leave quietly, pick up after yourself, keep your noise levels down, don't bring radios or players, and be polite to landowners and officials. Climb safely, always using ropes. Injuries on public or private land often result in temporary or permanent closure - don't ruin things for everyone else just to get a thrill. Guide services, such as those offered below, can be helpful. Visitors from out of state should note that traprock climbs generally are toproped, usually offer poor protection, and are both intellectually and physically challenging. Leaders should start well below the grade they climb in their local area until they are comfortable with the rock types in Connecticut.
